Healthy Buildings & Sustainability Tour

Description

The Walter E. Washington Convention Center is a leader in environmental stewardship and sustainability initiatives, boasting a long list of energy-reducing features. Join this behind-the-scenes, free, 60-minute walking tour to get an in-depth look the latest in sustainable and well building technology. Whether you are looking for innovative tips to run a large building with sustainability at the forefront or want to adapt some of the features into your own practice, hear how the Convention Center’s commitment to sustainability, water efficiency, energy & atmosphere, and indoor environment quality empowers a promising future.

The tour will kick off exploring the sustainable side of food and beverage. You will have the opportunity to peek inside the kitchen, learn about the tools and menus specifically chosen by the convention center chefs to cater to their sustainability initiatives, explore their induction cooking techniques, and learn about the convention center’s composting systems. You’ll see first-hand the recycling and waste minimization program, discover the energy efficient ways the convention center is heated and cooled, and even stop by the engineering command center.

As the first convention center in the world to receive the WELL Health-Safety Rating, a verified rating for all new and existing building and space types focusing on operational policies, maintenance protocols, stakeholder engagement and emergency plans to address a post-COVID-19 environment now and into the future, you will explore how the building expands their practices to keep their temporary tenants well, supports and empowers the community, and upholds progressive sustainable tactics through its 2.3 million square feet.

Among its many accolades, over the past year, several transformative changes and physical improvements were implemented at the Convention Center with an eye toward to the future and to help drive the economic recovery of the District of Columbia. The Walter E. Washington Convention Center was the first convention center in the United States to implement BIOPROTECT™ by SurfaceGuard, a NASA developed technology designed to kill COVID-19, and was the first convention center in the Northeast Corridor to achieve GBAC STAR™ certification, which was recently recertified for 2022.
